An Air Force veteran who earns Social Security disability benefits is trying to have the law changed regarding how these benefits affect alimony payment calculations.Currently, divorce courts in each state include these payments when determining the overall amount of alimony payments a person must make.
The veteran became disabled shortly after working as a first responder during the aftermath of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. He began earning Social Security Disability benefits, alongside unemployment benefits, after he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.
He earns $4,400 each month, and a judge in his divorce proceeding decided that he owed his ex-wife $1,000 a month in spousal support payments based on that overall amount of disability.
